Mental Health: Not My Circus, Not My Monkeys

Our unhealthy view of mental health begs the question, what does society stand to lose by viewing mental illness as a form of sickness and not a weakness? Social stigma can provide a comfort, viewing youth as self-inflicting their mental illness allows the possibility of a world where “bad things happen to bad people and good things happen to good people.” Indeed, some view youth with mental illness to be individuals of a weak constitution and attention grabbers. The lack of awareness, or rather a lack of willingness to understand, has huge costs for youth. Mental illness is not a character defect. Take a look at depression.
